About this course

During April 2010 new rules were introduced that means holders of NRSWA cards would need to undertake a re-assessment of their skills before they could renew their existing card. The course is designed to prove an Operatives or Supervisors competency by re-assessing the core units they hold on their existing NRSWA card. Utility & Highways maintenance operatives and supervisors carry out the vital task of repairing and maintaining the UK’s highway infrastructure and it is a legal requirement in England that people carrying out works on the highways hold the SWQR card.

The NRSWA Refresher course is designed to refresh your knowledge of the content for the operative or supervisor (as applicable) as follows:

  • Location and avoidance of underground apparatus
  • Signing, lighting and guarding units
  • Excavation in the road/highway
  • Reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
  • Reinstatement of sub-base and road-base in non-bituminous materials
  • Reinstatement of cold-lay bituminous materials
  • Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways

Units that may also be included:

  • Reinstatement of hot-lay bituminous materials
  • Reinstatement of concrete slabs
